Trade Accords Promote Growth & Opportunity
Small business group responds to push back on CAFTA
July 26, 2005
Washington, D.C. - In response to a chorus of claims that international trade accords -- such as the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) -- are bad for the U.S., Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) President and CEO Karen Kerrigan vigorously defended such agreements as pro-entrepreneur and pro-freedom.

‘Open and free commerce among nations are bedrock American ideals that have been put into action through U.S. trade agreements over the years. Such accords have not only created a more collaborative world, they have led to extraordinary economic opportunities for entrepreneurs, small business owners and their workforce,' said the SBE Council's Kerrigan.

Trade remains critical to the well being of small business and the U.S. economy, according to the SBE Council. Small businesses account for 97 percent of U.S. exporters and improved access to global markets is particularly important to the growth and innovative capacity of these firms. Additionally, small businesses benefit greatly from the cost savings made possible through imported goods and services.

‘Establishing ground rules for trade has not eroded our independence or sovereignty as a nation. In fact, it has led other nations to accept our ideals while increasing prosperity not only at home, but throughout the world,' added Kerrigan.

For more than ten years the SBE Council, a nonprofit advocacy organization, has been working to protect small business and promote entrepreneurship. For more information, please visit: http://www.sbecouncil.org/.
