SBE Council Joins Senate in Push for Legal Reform
...initiatives will bring balance back to a system run amok, says SBE Council
June 9, 2005
Washington, D.C. - At a press conference today in the U.S. Capitol, Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) President & CEO Karen Kerrigan joined Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA), John Cornyn (R-TX) and other Senate leaders in support of their legal reform agenda unveiled at the event. According to the SBE Council, advancing these smart reforms is vital for bringing the legal system back into balance.

‘In particular small firms and entrepreneurs are victimized by the ‘fix' in the legal system. That is, they get hit with legal action and most have no other choice but to settle -- to pay an exorbitant exit tax. This is not fair and it certainly is not justice,' said Kerrigan.

The Senators unveiled a comprehensive agenda that, among other items, includes class action reform, medical liability reform, asbestos litigation reform, fast food consumer junk lawsuit reform, lawsuit abuse reduction, and patent litigation reform. According to Kerrigan, our economy cannot continue to sustain the levels of innovation and growth necessary to compete in the global marketplace and support our growing population and government programs unless reforms are enacted.

‘Risk-taking, investment, business start-ups and growth, job creation and innovation are all at risk unless we stop the current abuse of our legal system,' she added.

The SBE Council is a nationwide nonpartisan advocacy that has been working to protect small business and promote entrepreneurship since 1994. For more information, please visit: www.sbecouncil.org.
