Small Biz Wants Leadership on Tax System Reform
April 17, 2006
Washington, D.C. -- One of the nation's leading small business advocates urged Congress and President Bush to re-energize efforts at reforming our nation's tax system. Not only is the tax code horribly confusing and costly for U.S. entrepreneurs, it puts our nation at a significant disadvantage internationally, according to Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) President & CEO Karen Kerrigan.

‘We don't need another tax reform study or commission to tell our political leaders what they might want to do. We need action, we need leadership, and now,' remarked Kerrigan.

Kerrigan made these observations at a ‘Tax Day' press conference today hosted by Americans for Tax Reform at the National Press Club. Other taxpayer and grassroots organizations also called for leadership in reforming the federal tax system, as well as for action on other issues like excessive spending and regulatory system overhaul.

According to Kerrigan, small business owners are getting impatient by inaction on the tax reform front. Now, with proposals under consideration that would further increase their compliance burdens, their frustration is growing.

‘The small business and entrepreneurial sector has been working their collective tails off to keep our economy humming. They feel Washington is turning their back on them in this regard,' added Kerrigan

Kerrigan warned against proposals and current initiatives that aim to place more burdens and requirements on small businesses to deal with the so-called ‘tax gap.'

‘It appears that the Internal Revenue Service is targeting small businesses through a significant increase in audit activity, as well as creative proposals that would place more compliance burdens and costs on this sector. I am very concerned that an enforcement heavy approach, combined with costly and not-well-thought-out proposals will lead us back to an era of abusive practices and high inefficiency at the agency,' warned Kerrigan.
